Unit 1 Rules Of Filmmaking

Rule Of Third

The Rule Of Third is a guide line used to help compose a visual image such as paintings, photographs, films etc. The use of the guide line is to create more tension and interest on the subject. The way it works is by dividing the image into nine boxes. Having two vertical lines that are equally apart, and two horizontal lines that are equally apart. By placing the important object, character etc on the lines this will create tension or a focus point. For example, in the image the camera is above the sky diver. He is aligned with the right vertical line and in the middle section. This makes the audience focus on what the sky diver is looking down on. First our eyes will look at the sky diver, then move on to looking around the sky diver.

180 Degree Rule

180degree

The 180 degree rule is a technique used as a guideline in which, two people are having a conversation. The camera is focused over actor one’s shoulder, capturing their point of view of talking to actor two. The camera then rotates from actor 1 to actor 2 in a 180 degree. The camera also stays on one side of the line of action. The camera then stops when its over the shoulder of actor two. This is effective as the first actor is always frame right of the second character. Also the spatial relationship will be consistent from shot to shot, this will not confuse the audience.

Camera Angle And Position

The camera angle is very important when taking a photo or filming. This is because the camera angle can portray a person or object in various different ways. For example, if you used a low angle shot, then the character will be mad to look bigger than they actually are. This can also create a sense of intimidation. Another example would be if you used a high angle shot. This shot is also referred as birds eye view. This shot is used to get the entirety of the subject. This is effective if you want the image or shot to be descriptive.

My Film

This is my finished edit on my first film. The storyline is about a boy who was forced to leave his house and leave his family. This was because of constant arguing with his family, mainly his mother. The film was of the boy giving his story, how he feels and what it’s like being homeless.

One thing that went well was being able to create our own cinematics. This was easy because our location was perfect for a variety of shots. For example, canal, train station, famous monuments etc. Another thing that went well was the concept of how the film was going to be edited. The cinematics being played, whilst the actors voice being played over the shots. Then transitioning back to the boy.

However, I feel we could have improved on a few things. We could have improved on the cinematic shots we took. This is because the shots did not make sense with the story that was being told. Another thing we could have improved is getting a variety of shots with the actor. This would keep the audiences attention. Using the same shot tends to bore the audience.
